Secondary Attendance & Inclusion Support
Supporting Schools, Young People and Families Through Inclusive Attendance Practice
At Instill Excellence, we understand that attendance difficulties within secondary schools are often complex and influenced by a range of emotional, social, family and educational factors.
Many young people face barriers which impact their ability to engage with school consistently and attendance concerns can quickly become entrenched without the right support and intervention.
Our approach is caring, child-centred and inclusive, focusing on building positive relationships with pupils and families, understanding barriers to attendance and helping schools develop supportive pathways back into education.
We believe sustainable attendance improvement comes through partnership working, early intervention and ensuring the voice of the young person remains central to planning and decision-making.
How We Support Schools
Home Visit & Welfare Support
Targeted home visits focused on engagement, wellbeing and understanding barriers impacting attendance.
Family Engagement
Working alongside families to build positive relationships, strengthen communication and identify appropriate support.
Safe & Well Support
Maintaining contact with pupils who are not currently accessing school through supportive wellbeing and engagement conversations.
Attendance & Inclusion Planning
Supporting schools to understand barriers, identify next steps and develop practical attendance support plans.
Attendance Strategy Support
Providing guidance and support around Persistent Absence, Severe Absence and vulnerable learners.
Early Help & Multi-Agency Working
Supporting schools to consider wider intervention, Early Help and additional support services where appropriate.
Our Attendance Intervention Approach
Our Attendance Intervention Process is designed to build positive relationships with families whilst ensuring support is timely, proportionate and focused on achieving the best possible outcomes for children and young people.
Initial Engagement
Where a home visit has been agreed with the school, we will make up to three attempts to engage with the family. These visits provide an opportunity to discuss any barriers to attendance, offer support and encourage contact with the school. Where we are unable to make contact, a calling card will be left inviting the family to get in touch.
Moving Forward Together
If contact has not been established following these initial engagement visits, the focus moves from further home visits to a planned, collaborative approach with the school. Together, we will review the circumstances, consider the information available and agree the most appropriate next steps to support improved attendance and family engagement.
This may include attendance planning meetings, targeted family engagement, multi-agency working where appropriate, or other school-led interventions tailored to the child's individual needs.
Further home visits will always remain available where there are identified safeguarding concerns, significant welfare issues or where a targeted visit is agreed as the most appropriate intervention.
Our aim is to ensure that support remains purposeful, responsive and focused on achieving positive, sustainable improvements in attendance, rather than repeating the same intervention where it is unlikely to achieve further progress.
Support & Planning Review
Following the third unsuccessful visit, the case will be reviewed jointly with the school.
The purpose of this review is to:
-
explore barriers impacting attendance,
-
understand the voice and experiences of the young person,
-
identify appropriate support strategies,
-
consider pastoral and inclusion-based interventions,
-
explore Early Help and wider support services,
-
and agree clear next steps.
Our approach promotes support before escalation and focuses on identifying practical solutions which help young people successfully re-engage with education.
Fortnightly Attendance & Inclusion Support
An experienced Attendance Practitioner attends school every two weeks to support attendance leaders, pastoral teams and wider school staff.
Support may include:
-
reviewing Persistent and Severe Absence cases,
-
discussing vulnerable pupils,
-
identifying barriers to attendance,
-
supporting attendance meetings,
-
reviewing intervention plans,
-
exploring Early Help and wider support,
-
gathering and considering pupil voice,
-
and providing practical advice and guidance around next steps.
This ensures attendance concerns continue to progress, even where direct family engagement has not yet been achieved.
Safe & Well Contact
For pupils who remain out of education and require ongoing engagement, schools may request fortnightly Safe & Well contact.
Safe & Well contact provides:
-
regular wellbeing check-ins,
-
supportive engagement with young people,
-
opportunities to maintain a connection with school,
-
identification of emerging concerns,
-
and support for reintegration planning where appropriate.
This ensures young people remain visible, supported and connected whilst attendance concerns and wider support plans continue to be progressed.

Our Approach
Our work is rooted in inclusion, empathy and relationship-based practice. We recognise that improving attendance is not achieved through enforcement alone. Sustainable change comes through understanding barriers, listening to young people and families and creating supportive pathways back into education.
Aligned with the Department for Education's Working Together to Improve School Attendance guidance and the principles underpinning the Children's Wellbeing and Schools Act 2026, our approach supports schools to improve attendance whilst ensuring young people feel valued, heard and supported throughout their educational journey.
Our focus is on moving attendance cases forward through engagement, support and strategic intervention rather than repeated unsuccessful home visits.
